Evolving a sourcebook of ideas, tools and tactics for citizen groups, civic leaders and urban professionals. It will show how to plan, design and deliver viable urban neighbourhoods, quarters and centres in our increasingly complex world. We call this the Massive Small Compendium.

The Massive Small project comes at a time when we have to do more with less, when so many of our big plans have failed, when government has been talking about focusing local but is still acting big, and when there is increasing emphasis on the relationship between urban resilience, social innovation and civil society.

It is a time of rapid urbanization worldwide, yet most in authority can do almost nothing to guide urban change. Planning is sidelined, and people are looking for other ways to shape their own habitat. This situation has become the ‘new normal’.
